Vintage garments have more than once provided inspiration for Caroline Rust's works of art and so have women from history. This series is composed of portraiture style imagery of a selection of historic females, painted upon grounds built in low relief by the layering of various garments, primarily undergarments. Providing a space for these women, with a turning of the inside out, each one is exposed at a moment of vulnerability. She is ‘accompanied’ by a man from history; chosen metaphorically to symbolize a blending of the genders, a righting of potential injustices. These works illuminate these women’s internal power.
Their drive strengthens Rust with the knowledge of their bravery, courage, and steadfast devotion to live their lives by their terms while in the pursuit of a goal.
