Accenting remembrances and fantasies of travels and dress, the paintings in this series, Fashion Memories, activate blouses, chemises, even lingerie from Rust’s wardrobe in low-relief to poetically explore the principals of mood and atmosphere by capturing the essence of a place. The work evokes insight as viewers are asked to peer into the private, intimate spaces of apparel Rust has coaxed from her closet. Not only do the singular feminine shirt-like veneers synthesize an analysis of surface, they consider the relationship one has with one’s clothes. Just as wearing certain apparel can inspire its wearer, the paintings’ romantic vignettes invite viewers to be transported to distant moments in time or faraway lands.
